Jonathan Staples, Course for Selborne Society, London

“The hedge laying day at Waltham Place yesterday was greatly enjoyable… thank you very much for keeping me and all there very positively ‘on task’ until the fading light required that we down tools!”

Will Smith, Course at Waltham Place, Berks

“Thank you for the brilliant hedgelaying course last Wednesday. It was a fantastic day and an enticing introduction to the craft. Thank you for being such a warm and helpful instructor. I’m looking forward to starting repairing the hedge down in Narberth, learning more about the craft as well as exploring some of the local Welsh styles.”

Nick Taylor, Course at Holland Park, West London

“We all greatly enjoyed our hedge laying today. So much so that for the first time ever, in my experience, the group asked if I could arrange a follow-on session to at least use up the stakes and binders you left us with… Thank you for coming along and introducing us to the world of hedging.”

Dick Millard, Course at Chiseldon, Wilts

“Your hedgelaying courses are the most popular, in-demand courses we run. The attendees always have such a great, informative time with you…no matter how arctic the weather at Wells!”

Nicole Clough, Course at Wells Farm, Oxon

“Many thanks for organising the excellent course on Saturday: I learned lots, enjoyed myself, and you even got some of your weeds chopped down! Clive is an excellent tutor, very relaxed and friendly, and the course was well worth the money.”

Rachel Cassidy, Course at Earth Trust, Oxon

“Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the scythe course on Saturday. It was an excellent blend of practical and theory with some interesting background along the way. Think everyone came away having made a good start. Today I cut for around 5 hours, I was absolutely itching to get started and was generally pleased with the result.”

Rob Chew, Course at Earth Trust, Oxon

“I was under the misconception the day would be spent scything with a heavy sickle, back breaking in the searing heat whereas the day was very enjoyable and relaxing. We spent a lot of time getting the scything action correct, which is upright, and the scythe is extremely light. We also learnt how to sharpen and peen the blade, which is vital to making the cutting easier and quicker. It was a lot easier than I had anticipated and the icing on the cake was a lovely day in the flower meadows and the smell of cut grass!”

Jenny Carter, Course at Earth Trust, Oxon

“Thank you for the scything course on Saturday, was a great day and I very much appreciated the chance to learn from someone with real experience, there is only so much you can teach yourself without a tutor and I really benefitted from attending.”

Pete Morton, Course at The Old Farmyard, Oxon

“Once again, thank you for your most informative and interesting talk and practical application of mowing with a scythe on Wednesday. Hearing about your work and understanding of how to help maintain biodiversity and healthy land management practices is so inspiring.”
